Magic Mambo Moments - What Resident DJ Danny O Has to Say
As Ibiza’s foremost sunset spot, it’s no secret that since Mambo first opened its doors back in 1994, it’s provided a myriad of magical moments for everyone who’s been lucky enough to cross its path on the famous sunset strip in San Antonio. That’s because something extraordinary happens when the sun waves goodbye in the Balearics – the sky transforms into a rainbow of candyfloss colours, arms are thrown around friends and declarations of love come as fast and furious as the beat of the kick drum booming from behind the DJ booth. The air hangs heavy with White Isle wonder – you can’t quite put your finger on what that is but you can feel it – it pulses through your veins and emerges as a smile plastered across your face.
While most of us get to experience this unmatchable Mambo magic just a handful of times, the venue’s resident DJs are fortunate enough to live it week in, week out. So we decided to speak to the music selectors who get front row seats to the famous Ibiza sunset every night of the week, to find out the one Mambo night that will stick in their hearts forever. This month, Danny O delves into his memory box to reveal all.
“I’ve lived on Ibiza for almost 11 years now and I’ve been working for Grupo Mambo for nine of those, but for me, the memory that really sticks out is when Fatboy Slim graced the decks in 2015. He’s played for us many times and the atmosphere is always unreal, but on this occasion it was particularly nuts. I played the warm up set to an absolutely packed terrace and just as the sun was beginning to set, Fatboy Slim jumped off a boat in the bay in which he’d been partying with his family and swam ashore to take over, completely drenched! Everyone went wild as he climbed up from the shore and you couldn’t see the sea for all the people – the atmosphere was electric. It was a perfect Mambo moment; one I’ll never forget.”
