Armand Van Helden Wings Mambo
Armand Van Helden bought his first drum machine at the age of 14 and in 1983 secured his debut DJ gig playing soul and funk at his school disco in Boston. His first residency at The Loft had him playing Deep House in the basement and promoting rave on the first floor. However his true love is House and since those early days he has gone on to produce tracks for such influential artists as New Order, Daft Punk, Janet Jackson, Katy Perry, David Guetta and Steve Aoki along with a number of his own distinctive sounding house gems. His remix of Professional Widow by Tori Amos was the soundtrack for the Ibiza summer of 1996, which helped make it a UK #1 soon after and saw Armand dominate the charts in that era. So to say that we were excited to have one of the World's most revered House DJ´s playing the Cafe Mambo DJ booth for the Together preparty at Amnesia, was an understatement.
Before Van Helden had arrived at Mambo, we had a big surprise visit from Sebastian Ingrosso, Otto Knows and Salvatore Ganacci, who packed the DJ Booth for an impromptu set and in turn warmed up the decks for the House legend. The large crowd that had gathered were amazed to find the big three names in front of them and were soon dancing to tracks such as Follow Me by Lykke Li and Trouble by Offiah. When Armand entered the energy fuelled DJ Booth he received much respect from Ingrosso, Otto and Ganacci. The four then went on to party together with Ingrosso on the mike whipping up the crowd for an unbelivable 60 minutes at Mambo.
Van Helden whose remix of, Freak Like Me by Lee Walker and DJ Deeon, is receiving plenty of airplay in Ibiza these days, delved into his rich back catalogue of House classics, serving us up Professional Widow, The Funk Phenomenon, My My My and Spin Spin Sugar, before dropping his brand new single, Wings, which samples the late Jim Diamond's classic hit I Won't Let You Down to a big reaction from the crowd and all in the DJ Booth. It seems to be a trend this summer as a number of producers including Claptone and Bob Sinclar are sampling 80’s tracks and it is really good to see the legend back doing what he does best. For the people lucky enough to be here for such a magical Ibiza moment, it was a night that will live long in all our memories.
